　　美國軍方在地球的某處發現了一個奇怪的圓環，圓環的制造技術完全不同于地球，而且通過測定圓環的歷史非常久遠甚至可以追溯到人類出現之前，圓環上還刻有很多奇怪的符號。這個圓環到底有什么作用？考古學家丹尼爾·杰克遜（詹姆斯·斯派德 James Spader 飾）博士對古埃及的象形文字及其歷史有很深的研究，而且對金字塔的建造也有一套自己的理論，可是他的觀點卻無法被人所接受。為了能尋找有力的證據，他開始對軍方發現的這個圓環進行研究，卻發現這個圓環卻是一個高科技產物，通過特定編碼的推動能與另外一個圓環聯通，形成一個蟲洞，可以進行超長距離且耗時極短的空間旅行。為了探知圓環聯通的另一端到底有什么，丹尼爾與杰克·歐尼爾（庫爾特·拉塞爾 Kurt Russell 飾）上校為首的軍方小隊一起穿越這星際之門，進入另外一個世界探險。在另一邊，他們發現了很多令人無法相信的事情，金字塔的建造之謎、外星人是否到訪過地球這些不解之謎都有了一個新的解讀……
