　　教立大學社會學系四年級學生山本秋平（本木雅弘飾）即將畢業，卻被畢業論文指導教授兼大學相撲部顧問的穴山（柄本明飾）找去，說他曠課太多不能給予學分，除非他愿意加入大學相撲部。　　秋平別無選擇，相撲部里只有一個留級多年、身材單薄的青木（竹中直人飾），相繼入伙的幾個人情況各異：胖子田中是虔誠的基督徒；大一新生春雄是秋平的弟弟，他的到來純屬被逼無奈。倉促成軍的他們在比賽中連連失利，引來眾人恥笑辱罵。　　面對嘲笑，他們開始認真訓練，希望在下次比賽中獲得好成績，英國留學生斯邁利也加入了相撲部，他們五人將走上什么樣的道路呢？
