Waldo and Irene have been living with Margit for the four years that they have been engaged. 故事發生在20世紀80年代，海灣市海關查扣了一個寄往香港的包裹，里面發現一件走私文物玉香籠。經過北京故宮博物院專家的考證，該文物是宮廷散落在民間的珍寶，運送北京途中被人所盜。由于事關重大，警方旋即成立調查組，按照相關線索他們終于鎖定了嫌疑人，誰知嫌疑人卻早已死于非命。根據相關證據，探員歐陽的準岳父——著名考古學教授司徒玉身上有著重大的嫌疑。在國法和愛情面前，歐陽不免顧慮重重。而承受巨大壓力的司徒玉也吐露了解放前發生在玉香籠身上的一段隱情。案情錯綜復雜，而狡猾殘忍的走私團伙的行蹤也在警方追查下昭然若現……
