Following her mother’s death, manga artist Soriya travels to her ancestral home in Phnom Penh, with hopes of reconnecting with her distant family and using the visit as inspiration for her work. All goes well initially. Renting an apartment in Metta, a rundown Khmer Rouge-era housing complex, her visit to her maternal relatives finds her welcomed with open arms. But Soriya’s waking hours in the apartment and its surroundings are punctuated by terrifying, bloody visions, almost as though she were a conduit for horrors of the past wanting to seep into the present. Inrasothythep Neth and Sokyou Chea’s blood-chilling psychological horror explores a personal and political past through the present, transforming a characterful space into an insidious environment. Surrounded by modern high-rises, this decrepit structure, with its brutalist architecture and peeling surfaces, is a relic from a dark period in history whose painful memories it has absorbed. In tracing Soriya’s ominous journey back to her roots, Tenement hints at a necessary reckoning with Cambodia’s political past without overplaying its historical dimension. It’s an impressive work from a woefully underrepresented national cinema.

清朝嘉慶年間，直隸永年縣青年楊露蟬（王群 飾）自幼習(xí)武。為求精進(jìn)，他按照蒙師的指點(diǎn)來(lái)到河南省溫縣陳家溝，準(zhǔn)備拜太極高手陳長(zhǎng)興為師。誰(shuí)想甫入陳家溝便因路見(jiàn)不平與陳的徒弟大打出手，而陳脾氣執(zhí)拗，拒不收徒。楊露蟬雖精誠(chéng)中肯，卻始終未能令陳回心轉(zhuǎn)意。楊氣憤不過(guò)，絕塵離去，并發(fā)誓十年后學(xué)成歸來(lái)，與陳一較高下。在此之后，他先后拜曾大業(yè)、宗勝蓀等人為師，最終師徒皆反目成仇。輾轉(zhuǎn)三年，落魄的楊露禪重返陳家溝。此時(shí)他不惜以刀破面，扮成乞丐進(jìn)入陳家，只為學(xué)成陳氏絕學(xué)……本片根據(jù)太極高手楊露蟬的事跡改編，楊師從陳長(zhǎng)興，后經(jīng)不斷改造精進(jìn)演化出楊式太極拳。
