 林黛玉（周璇 飾）和薛寶釵（王丹鳳 飾）相繼來到賈府定居，賈寶玉（袁美云 飾）對她們的到來感到非常高興。賈寶玉和黛玉對世俗仕途和經(jīng)濟繁華持有反感，盡管他們之間有深厚的感情，但彼此不時發(fā)生誤會，親疏之間產(chǎn)生變化。寶釵多次勸告寶玉致力于仕途，但寶玉對此感到反感。賈母一方面寵愛寶玉，同時又希望通過婚姻來束縛寶玉。大小姐元春，在她回家省親時選定了寶釵作為婚姻的對象。王熙鳳（白虹 飾）在其中起到了推波助瀾的作用，最終通過掉包的計策破壞了寶玉和黛玉之間的愛情。林黛玉在病榻上心灰意冷而去世。賈寶玉在新婚之夜發(fā)現(xiàn)自己受到欺騙，在為林黛玉祭奠之后，拋棄了通靈寶玉，決定離開塵世，出家修行。
